Etymology[]
- Ioki (五百城), has an uncommon reading: 'five' (五-い-i, as in 五百-いお-io 'many'); 'hundred' (百-お-o, as in 八百万-やおよろず-yaoyorozu 'eight million' or 'a countless number'); 'castle' (城-き-ki, as in 城-き-ki 'moated castle') -- together, it reads 'five hundred castles', or 'many castles'
- Like many Japanese surnames:
- it uses the kun reading in a compound, rather than the on reading
- probably originated as a person's family named after a place, whether physical or in lore of the time
- Mao (茉央), means 'jasmine' (茉-ま-ma) and 'center' (央-お-ou, shortened to o)
- Keep in mind:
- kanji for modern Japanese given names are often chosen only for their pronunciation, not necessarily their meaning
- many idols have stage names during their active years with a group (such as fellow 5th Generation member Tomisato Nao had with her prior idol group)
