We may soon see a Filipino version of the Japanese all-girl group AKB48, named after Akihabara area in Tokyo. The Filipino version of group is said to be called MNL48, named after Manila in the Philippines. Additionally, two other groups are said to be established in Asia – TPE48 (who will be based in Taiwan) and BNK48 (who will be based in Thailand).

This announcement is reportedly presented at the AKB48 single concert last March 26 held in Yokohoma, Kanagawa Stadium.

According to reports, when the announcement was made the audience applauded and cheered.

Additional reports mentioned that the three new groups in Asia will be formed this 2016.

For those who aren’t familiar with AKB48, the group has an original roster of 48 members and the group’s theater is located in Akihabara area hence, the name AKB48. Compared to other girl groups who occasionally perform in concerts and TV, AKB48 has its own theater where they perform daily for their fans.

AKB48 has a concept of having teams that rotate performances or can perform simultaneously at several events. They also have “handshake events,” which is similar to a meet-and-greet event with celebrities.

In Japan, AKB48 is known as a social phenomenon and it is considered as one of the top-earners when it comes to musical performers.

At present, AKB48 has sister groups in China and Indonesia. Soon, AKB48 will have sister groups in the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand.
