―Supermelion.com(src)

Maeda Atsuko is a Japanese idol singer. She is a former member of AKB48's 'Team A'. Atsuko has consistently been at the group's forefront - earning her the title of "The Face of AKB48" - having had a lead singing role in every single till her graduation. On March 25, 2012, Maeda announced that she would be graduating from AKB48. She graduated on August 27, 2012, at the AKB48 Theater.

She was one of the most prominent members in the group, being voted number one in the 2009 1st Senbatsu Election. However in the 2010 2nd Senbatsu Election, she lost to fellow member Oshima Yuko, who was the lead for their 17th Single: Heavy Rotation. She was part of the "Senbatsu" group in the most recent singles. In 2011 in the 3rd Senbatsu Election was voted number one in the election, winning over Oshima Yuko.

Career

AKB48

AKB48's 12th single, "Namida Surprise!", included voting tickets for the 2009 AKB48 Senbatsu Election, where fans can vote for who will be featured in the next single. Maeda won with 4,630 votes, becoming AKB48's most popular member and frontgirl for their 13th single, "Iiwake Maybe". However, in 2010, another election was held and Maeda lost to Yuko Oshima, who had 31,448 votes, whereas Maeda had 30,851 votes, so Yuko became the frontgirl for "Heavy Rotation".

Later that year a different type of election was held (AKB48 Janken Senbatsu Tournament) where any member in the group could be front girl. The members were selected by using the rock-paper-scissors method and Mayumi Uchida received the top spot of AKB48's single "Chance no Junban" which marked the first time a relatively unknown member has been at the front of a single.

In 2011, a third AKB48 senbatsu election was held. During the early results, Yuko Oshima was leading with first place. However in the final results Maeda won first place with 139,892 votes whereas Yuko Oshima had 122,843 votes beating her with 17,049 votes.

On 25 March 2012, during an AKB48 Concert at the Saitama Super Arena, Maeda announced that she would graduate from AKB48.

She graduated from AKB48 on August 27, 2012 in the AKB48 Theater.

On June 15, 2013, it was announced that Maeda will be appearing in AKB48's 5 Dome Tour, on July 31st, at Sapporo Dome.

Solo Singer

On April 23, 2011, it was announced by Maeda herself at AKB48's handshake event in Nagoya Dome that she would make her solo debut with her debut single "Flower", released on June 22, 2011. On June 15, 2013, it was announced that she will be releasing her 3rd single.

Acting Career

In 2007, Maeda played the sub-leading role in the film Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata, which was her first performance as an actress. She starred in the 2011 film Moshidora and appeared in Nobuhiro Yamashita's 2012 film Kueki Ressha. She also starred in Hideo Nakata's 2013 horror film The Complex. It was announced that she will co-star with Tony Leung Chiu-Wai in Kiyoshi Kurosawa's film 1905.
