"If the concept of AKB48 had to be summed up into one girl, it would be Maeda Atsuko."
―Supermelion.com(src)

Maeda Atsuko was a member of AKB48's Team A. She had consistently been at the forefront of the group, which earned her the title "The Face of AKB48". In both the 2009 Senbatsu Election and 2011 Senbatsu Election, she was voted number one. She graduated in August 2012 to pursue a career as a solo singer and actress.

Career

AKB48

AKB48's 12th single, "Namida Surprise!", included voting tickets for the 2009 AKB48 Senbatsu Election. Maeda won with 4,630 votes, becoming the center for AKB48's 13th single "Iiwake Maybe". However, in the next election Maeda lost to Oshima Yuko, and the latter became the frontgirl for "Heavy Rotation". In 2011, the third AKB48 Senbatsu Election was held. During the early results, Oshima was in first place. However, in the final results Maeda won, with over 17,000 more votes than Oshima.

On March 25 2012 during an AKB48 Concert at the Saitama Super Arena, Maeda announced that she would graduate. She graduated from AKB48 on August 27, 2012 in the AKB48 Theater. In June 2013, it was announced that Maeda will be appearing in AKB48's 5 Dome Tour, on July 31st, at Sapporo Dome. She also performed at AKB48's 2015 Request Hour.

Solo Singer

On April 23 2011, it was announced by Maeda herself at AKB48's handshake event in Nagoya Dome that she would make her solo debut. Her debut single, "Flower", was released on June 22 2011. She has had three more singles, with the most recent released in early 2014.

Acting Career

In 2007, Maeda played the sub-leading role in the film Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata, which was her first performance as an actress. She starred in the 2011 film Moshidora and appeared in Nobuhiro Yamashita's 2012 film Kueki Ressha. She also starred in Hideo Nakata's 2013 horror film The Complex.
